Joan of Arc, the burning

Description

reason for the costume: Heaven and Hell themed charity fundraiser

Cuirass: cardboard, hardened felt, vinyl (note to self: due to environmental concerns, we will avoid using vinyl in future costumes), paint, hot glue, tacky glue, many buckles and bits of leather. (the cross was a bad idea but we couldn't help ourselves, and we wanted it to be obvious). This cuirass, despite being made of cardboard, is quite sturdy. Because we had to do the finishing touches in a hotel room, it was not possible to riven the buckles on; had we done this, there would have been no need for hot glue. Even so, it held remarkably well.

sword: balsa wood and pine, lots of paint

chemise: same as used in Nausicaa.

Skirt: gathered skirt (dirndle) with stenciled fleur-de-lis in gold fabric paint

burning: red crinoline and orange-gold fabric, gathered and hand-sewn.

pants, shoes: previously owned.
